Renter's Insurance

Why is renters' insurance important?
Renters insurance is important because it covers your furniture, electronics, books, and other belongings if they are damaged or destroyed. It also covers you if someone else gets injured in your apartment, or if someone's personal property is damaged or destroyed, and tries to sue you.
Do I need renter's insurance even if my landlord has insurance?
Yes, you should obtain renters' insurance even if your landlord has insurance. Although your landlord almost certainly has property and liability insurance, your landlord's insurance does not cover the items you keep in your apartment. It also does not protect you if a guest is injured and sues you for liability.
How much does renters' insurance cost?
The average renter's insurance price range is $10-$25 per month. Some companies charge as low as $6 per month, while others charge as high as $35 per month. Could you check with your current insurance company to see if they offer discounts for bundled packages (e.g., auto, fire, and/or renters)? Also, if you are in college, check with your parents' insurance company to see whether you are covered while away at school.
